In 1952, his first big franchise journey started when he made a deal with one of his friends Pete Harman. This, later on, became part of his pop-culture icon persona which always wears a white suit and a Kentucky colonel tie. This moment was important in the creation of the icon, for after Sanders received that honor he quickly begun dressing the part. In the 1950s he was named a colonel by the state of Kentucky.
This resulted in the ideal fried chicken and it helped increase the popularity of his restaurant for the next 2 decades. The restaurant was successful, but what really catapulted its success was when in 1939, Sanders found that he could fry his chicken, which was coated in his iconic 11 herbs and spices, on a pressure cooker.
Soon he chose to remove the gas pump and convert the entire place to a restaurant. His food was good, which quickly meant that he managed to find great success simply from its sale. It was there that he began to serve classic Southern dishes to travelers who were passing through the area. The early origin story of KFC starts in 1930 when Sanders purchased a service station in the area of Corbin, Kentucky. The fact of the matter is that his great success and his establishment as an icon occurred after he sold his company at the age of 75. And while Colonel Sanders is an icon now, that was not the case. Even after that the Kentucky Fried Chicken Franchise which has now made him so famous was not created until the man was already at the age of 62.
